Am I the only one who finds it curious that we keep proposing what the Taliban have persistently rejected - negotiating with the West? They're not remotely interested in dealings with us and why should they be? They know the Dutch are wrapping up their stint tomorrow and we're following suit next year, so why would they have anything to say to us? This nonsense of "talking to the Taliban" beggars belief. It's stupid talk.

The Talibs are winning or at least that's how they see it and with good reason. They achieved a monumental victory (that we never mention) when they morphed from an insurgency into a classic, civil war. Going from guerrilla to rebel, from insurgency to civil war, depends on being able to establish an alternative government - holding territory, implementing judicial and administrative functions, either to the exclusion of or in parallel to the central government. This they have done and we had better realize what that portends.

The Talibs have said they'll talk with Karzai but only after Western forces have left their country. From their position that seems strategically sound. Layton and Cannon are irrelevant.

I SO agree. I've had enough of Harper since... before he was elected. But I suppose it's okay that he's doing nothing... think of the damage if we let someone that dumb actually do stuff in parliament. :P

I must say that I am surprise to find Harper coming out on top of Chretien. Mulroney is a stone-cold crook, so no surprise that he is dead last, but Chretien was a decent politician, albeit somewhat of a crook himself, I guess haha.

Perhaps his best years were not necessarily as Prime Minister, but any one of the 'Minister of' titles he held over the years. He did lots of good as Trudeau's foot soldier, and I think people fail to recognize that. He helped in a big way to bring home the Constitution, kick start the Natural Parks system, and of course in holding this country together. If anyone gets a chance to read his biography by John English, please do. He was a man built for politics.

That's difficult to say really. Because the NDP is an opposition party with relatively few seats in the house they can only do so much. New Democrat MPs have put forward many bills that I think are important. Unfortunately the Liberals and Conservatives tend to vote against these bills. IMO the NDP has done a great job at holding this government, and Liberal governments before it, to account. They've done a good job at exposing the flaws in the other parties' platforms and have negotiated compromises that will benifit Canadians. Voting for bills that are good for the country, and against those that are not.

You may want to check out http://ww.howdtheyvote.ca to see exactly what the NDP has been doing.

Nobody relies on the east coast seal hunt to live. Most seal slaughterers are fishermen who kill seals in their spare time for supplemental income.

It's irresponsible to accuse treehuggers, PeTA et al of providing inaccurate information and then doing it yourself.

No, I don't believe I am misinterpreting anything at all. You clearly feel that a monarch is undemocratic because the position is not filled through a direct voting process, and I've agreed with that statement as one unembellished with detail.

Admittedly, in the absence of substantive argument from you, I've tried to infer from the rest of your words why it is you think an unelected head of state is a problem and should be replaced with an elected office. As it seems I was unsuccessful in those attempts, the question then remains: why exactly is it ridiculous to have a constitutional monarch as head of state? Your position becomes even more puzzling when we remember that a) you admit the Canadian system of government is democratic, and b) that the institution of the Canadian monarchy is created and controlled - including the line of succession - by a constitution that's been supported by elected law-makers since its inception.

We don't have to share the same feelings, but surely you recognize that a subjective opinion backed up by neither evidence nor rational argument doesn't have much value at all.

I think the real problem is you're misinterpreting my opinion. I never said Canada's system of government was undemocratic. Of course it's not. What I said was our head of state, and the way that position is filled is democratic. Noone in their right mind would disagree with that, I'm sure.

Now, if you agree with our head of state being in her position simply because she was born into the right family, so be it. I don't share the same feelings.

Perhaps the problem is, Curtis, that you simplify things far too much. Only when considered in the most blunt and unsophisticated fashion do your statements hold water; yes, yes, voting for something is more directly democratic than not voting for something. However, that wasn’t your original statement; you said “democratic values” are incompatible with monarchy. And why? Apparently for no other reason than monarchy, by itself, does not involve voting.

But this mixes up the simple definition of direct democracy with the complex and variable political theory of democratic government, assuming, as it does, that the latter can be expressed in the same way as the former: solely through the act of voting. In reality, though, as invaluable and necessary as it is in any democracy, voting without counterbalance will inevitably result in a tyranny of the majority, thereby (and somewhat ironically) destroying the two key requirements for any democracy: an equal voice for all citizens in the exercise of power, and universally recognized rights and freedoms. As Canada already meets both those requirements, and more, the monarchy, for all its lack of votes, does nothing to hamper the expression of democratic values, thereby rendering your initial statement invalid: It is perfectly acceptable, even right, to have a hereditary head of state for a country that prides itself on its democratic values. For absolute clarity, though, I would add the caveat that such a head of state must operate within the constraints of constitutional law, parliamentary democracy, and responsible government, which, again, Canada has.

Her opinion on Gay marriage was just that; an opinion. But in her response she showed off her foolishness by saying she was glad to be in a country where people could choose. But that is the point - they can't choose! Only in the four states where gay marriage is legal. She obviously doesn't understand the issue, nor did she understand the question. If she did live in a country with choice and then stated her personal choice it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure what you're having trouble with. I think most sensible people would agree that electing a head of state is more democratic than appointing one. I never said you couldn't have a democracy with an appointed head of state, obviously you can. Nor did I say countries with elected head of states were demonstrating "ultimate expression of democracy". If you'd like to post your disagreements with my opinions then by all means do so, but don't try to twist my words in order to win a debate on the subject.

Now, what pray tell are the "cultural implications of abolishing the Crown"?

I'm aware you didn't say those things. Hence, I *asked* what your expectations were, given that you've posted your opinions for eveyone to read, but refuse to support them with logical argument, let alone fact.

Pehaps you just don't like answering questions?
