Bell wants changes to provider switching

February 23, 2009 · Filed Under Current Events · 1 Comment

Bell Canada wants to change the way people switch to a new phone provider. Currently the new provider contacts the old provider to cancel the service. Bell wants the CRTC to require departing customers to contact the provider they are leaving personally. Bell’s reasoning is it would give them a chance to try to win back the customer and to notify them about any cancellation fees.

Essentially, what Bell whats is a guaranteed chance to pressure their outgoing customer into staying. Also, making it harder for customers to switch providers will no doubts result in more people sticking with their current provider despite shitty service and/or higher prices. The way I see it, it’s really not necessary for the CRTC to implement this change. What Bell should concern themselves with is improving their service and prices so their customers will have no reason to switch.

9-month limit on Calgary roadside memorials?

February 23, 2009 · Filed Under Current Events · Comment

A City of Calgary council committee is recommending a limit of 9 months for roadside memorials. The idea is the city would contact the family of the deceased notifying them the time limit is up, and then the memorial would be removed. The city would still have the power to remove memorials earlier for “safety, construction, or maintenance” reasons.

I’m not a huge fan of roadside memorials, and if I was killed in a car accident I would prefer to be memorialized in a cemetery than on the site of where I was killed. That said, I recognize that everyone grieves in their own way and if a roadside memorial helps them deal with the loss of a loved one than I have no problem with that. One concern is memorials being a distraction. I’ve noticed lots of roadside memorials through the years, and have never been distracted by them. They’re certainly less of a distraction than billboards and other advertisements. Plus a recent University of Calgary study found that roadside memorials do not pose a hazard. In fact, they have the opposite effect.

If a roadside memorial becomes so large that it obstructs drivers’ views than by all means contact the family and ask them to remove some of the items left at the side of the road, but the city should not be telling people how long they can grieve for.
