Harper has kids!
I just saw Stephen Harper’s latest pre-campaign campaign ad, and I just don’t get it. It’s titled “Family is everything” and can be found on conservative.ca if you’re interested. In the ad Harper is talking about his children and things he does with them. At the end of his little spiel he says being a father is the best experience of his life. While I’m sure that’s probably true, as it’s true for millions of fathers across the country, I’m not sure how that makes him the best choice for PM. Stephane Dion and Jack Layton both have children and I’m sure they love them very much. Does that mean they deserve my support too? I guess the message the Cons are going for is Harper is one of us. He’s just an average Canadian, he has the same values as us, he’s someone we can be friends with. That seems to be the general theme of the other similar Conservative ads that have Harper sitting in an armchair talking to people sitting around him. (We only get to see the backs of their heads…) The reality is Harper isn’t one of us. He doesn’t know what Canadians want or need, and quite frankly I don’t think he really cares. The ads all end with the words “Canada. We’re better off with Harper.” Apparently they’ve decided to promote Harper instead of the entire party. I’ve yet to figure out why. I personally can’t stand the guy.
Canada. We’d be better off without Harper.
