The monarchy is ridiculous.

Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe said Wednesday that Canada should no longer have a governor general and called the monarchy “ridiculous”. When I read this on CTV’s website I agreed wholeheartedly. Duceppe obviously has a separatist agenda that fuels his comments, which I don’t agree with, but I do agree that we should no longer have a queen as our head of state. To me it just seems wrong to have an appointed head of state for an country that prides itself on its democratic values. Here’s a clip I found on YouTube. It’s funny and does a great job of summing up my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5GZIDnMzZQ

Proudly Canadian, Made in China

I was reading a Globe and Mail article the other day that really pissed me off. Apparently the Hudson’s Bay Company, which took over the contract for Canadian Olympians’ clothing from Roots, is making 80% of their uniforms in China. Hillary Marshall, the director of corporate communications for Hudson’s Bay Co. is blaming the fact that most of the textile industry has moved overseas. Well Hillary, Roots didn’t have any difficulty making their lines of Olympic clothing right here in Canada. If fact, they made damn sure the uniforms were Canadian made. I guess they were more concerned about Canada’s image than they were with their bottom line. It’s much cheaper to have children in China make your clothes for you than it is to make them here at home isn’t it?

Elliot Lifson, the president of the Canadian Apparel Federation, agrees that it wouldn’t be hard to find a Canadian supplier but doesn’t think we should blame the Bay. He says: “Don’t hang the Hudson’s Bay out to dry. If you’re going to do that, do that to everybody. We might as Canadians go out and hang ourselves, because that’s what we’re doing. What can I tell you? Go try and find a made-in-Canada label in Wal-Mart.” Well Elliot, Wal-Mart wasn’t given the contract to supply uniforms for Canadian Olympians were they? If Wal-Mart was responsible or making stuff for our Olympic team then your argument might be halfway relevant. We all already know that Wal-Mart sells cheap, made in China crap. The thing is, we expect better for a team that’s supposed to be representing us to the world.
