Myra Canyon Trestles

On June 3rd I headed up to Myra canyon to hide another geocache. I have 12 of them hidden now, 3 of them are part of a series I’m setting up along the Kettle Valley Railway. If you don’t know what the heck a geocache is check some of my previous blog entries, or better yet, check out geocaching.com.

Anyway, I took Cocoa along and she really enjoyed the walk, but I think it was too hot for her. She was panting a lot, and really liked the cool shade inside the tunnel. I took quite a few pictures along the way, and wanted to post a few of them here. It’s really looking nice up there since the fire. Most of the trestles have been rebuilt and there’s work being done on the remaining ones. I could only walk as far as the first tunnel on the Myra side because of construction, but that was far enough for me.

Here are some of the pictures I took. Click them for a full size view.

1
Standing dead trees from the fire of 2003.

2
It’s interesting to see the new growth amongst the burnt trees. Here are some of the many maples I saw.

3
One of the trestles.

4
A deep cut in the rocks. One of my geocaches is hidden on the hill on the left side.

5
Apparently someone decided the rocks needed some securing. Those bolts were never there when I walked through many years ago.

Here’s Cocoa making her way across one of the trestles. As you can see she’s having a great time. She didn’t even seem too upset when someone’s rottweiler tried to eat her alive. She put up quite a fight until the guy pulled his dog away. She’s one tough mutt. I’m really going to miss her.

7
The same trestle again. Minus Cocoa.

8
Another trestle.

9
A couple of trestles on the other side of the canyon. I couldn’t get there, but you can see some construction happening near the one on the right.

10
Some trees that were made red by fire retardant.

This spider has an awesome view from one of the trestles.

This is the view from the geocache I hid that day.

Calgary, The Heart of the New West

Well, this is my first blog post from my new home here in Calgary. I left Kelowna as planned on the 5th, but didn’t arrive in Calgary until the 6th, and haven’t really gotten around to posting until now.

My mom had offered to help me move my stuff to Calgary, but she worked the night before and had been up all day driving so we ended up stopping somewhere near Roger’s Pass for a nap, and then we stopped again for the night in Golden. It worked out ok though. We arrived here just a few minutes before my roommate got home from work.

The first day of the trip was a lot of fun. ;-) My bed was tied to the roof of my parent’s van, and was catching a lot of wind. We ended up having to stop in Vernon and tie it down better. There’s no way we would have made it the full 600 and something kilometres without losing it along the way. Plus it was pouring rain almost the entire trip. The bed was covered with a tarp, but it still got a little wet, so my first night sleeping in Calgary was on the floor upstairs while I waited for my bed to dry.

Every thing is pretty good now. I have pretty much everything unpacked, and it’s starting to feel like home. I just have to do some cleaning I guess to make the place livable. It was kind of a disaster when I moved in.

I’m on my weekend right now, but I ended up working seven days in a row starting on June 9th. My transfer was supposed to be complete, but when I went into Wal-Mart on the 8th to talk to someone in personnel, no one knew anything about it. Not even the store manager. Everything is worked out now. I guess the personnel manager was away. I like this Wal-Mart a lot better so far. I liked most of the people where I worked before, but the store was another story. I can’t really put my finger on it, but there’s something about Wal-Mart here that makes it seem like a much better place to work. They’re paying me considerably more too, so that’s a plus. :-D And I get Saturday and Sunday off. That may change though. There’s supposed to be a new manager taking over nights and he said he may need me to work on those days. Doesn’t really matter to me, as long as I get two days in a row.

I still have a lot of stuff to do to get settled into this city. Like changing my address for all my bills, and setting up a new bank account, but I’m really excited about being in a new city so I’m not too worried about that stuff right now.

I guess I don’t really have much else to post about right now. There’s a post that I was going to make before I left Kelowna, but with being busy with packing and all, I didn’t have the time. I’ll make that post directly after this one I guess.
