Sheep
I found an interesting story in the news. At first I thought it was a joke, but then I noticed it was on a legitimate news website.
ISTANBUL, Turkey Jul 8, 2005 – First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.
In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned, Aksam reported.
“There’s nothing we can do. They’re all wasted,” Nevzat Bayhan, a member of one of 26 families whose sheep were grazing together in the herd, was quoted as saying by Aksam.
The estimated loss to families in the town of Gevas, located in Van province in eastern Turkey, tops $100,000, a significant amount of money in a country where average GDP per head is around $2,700.
“Every family had an average of 20 sheep,” Aksam quoted another villager, Abdullah Hazar as saying. “But now only a few families have sheep left. It’s going to be hard for us.”
Cool fireworks
I went to the fireworks with Suzanne last night. They were delayed for quite a while because it was really windy last night. Come to think of it, it’s really windy almost every Canada Day in Kelowna, and the fireworks never start on time. It was good that they were delayed though, because Suzanne and I were late getting down to Waterfront Park. I changed the style of this site again just for Canada day, but I think I might leave it like this for a while. This style is called Canada4Life. It was inspired by my other website.
I’ve added a quotes page to this site. I’ve had a random quote on each page since this site launched, but I decided to make a page with all of the quotes on it. There’s a link to the new quotes page in the menu at the top of this page.
I’m working 13 hours at two jobs tonight, so I’m going to get some sleep.
Canada Day
Canada turns 138 years old today. I was originally supposed to work tonight, but my boss called me and told me I have the day off because I already worked four days this week, they’re paying me for the stat, and they don’t want to pay me overtime. So I work four days and get paid for five. And I get to go to the fireworks tonight. Sounds like a good deal to me.
